The Albue spit

Picture
The narrow spit out to Albuen is a special nature reserve. At the narrowest point the spit is only 25 meters wide. On the inner side the fjord's calm water in Søndernor can be experienced, while waves from Langelandsbæltet break on the outer side.

On the first part, where the spit is widest, there is ample opportunity to find many of the fjord’s rare plants. Just walking along the narrow path one may be lucky enough to see sea holly, moon carrot, wild celery, meadow fleabane and yellow sweet clover.

Guests from western Denmark can also find the broad-leaf peppergrass with the white flowers that are rare in the west, but abundant by Nakskov Fjord. Other species include strawberry clover, sea milkwort, birdsfoot trefoil, common scurvey grass, wild carrot, field wormwood, sea wormwood, common wormwood, baltic marram grass, sea lyme grass etc. Yes, the list is long - there are perhaps 100 species in a fairly small area. Try to explore with a book of flora or look in the gallery to the right. Please do not stray too far away from the path out of respect for the birds.

Farther out, along the spit, birds are most often seen on the inner side, facing the fjord. Winds from the south and southwest create shallow waters, and then one can see quite few wading birds foraging for food. Curlew, gray plover, redshank, avocet, dunlin, red knot and godwits are regular guests on the Albue spit.

Out at the narrowest point one can choose to turn back or continue the trip to Albuen. The narrow place is called ’the Cut’ as over the ages the sea has regularly cut through the spit here. In earlier times it could be perilous to cross ’the Cut’ when a torrent ran through. Once a young girl from Albuen drowned when she tried to get home after dark.

’The Cut’ is submerged almost every winter, but is rarely breached. The last time the Cut was breached was following a violent northwestly storm on 1 November 1995. Immediately after this, there was a 10 metre wide and 2 metre deep hole with a strong current. A load of big straw bales was dropped in the hole, so it was quickly closed again.

On the return trip, you can choose to walk on the outer side, where it sometimes is possible to find interesting stones. Should there be only sand and no stones, look for amber in the seaweed.
