Just north of Nakskov towards Købelev, the manor house Asserstup lies at the end of a newly planted lime tree avenue. Here is one of West Lolland’s few castle mounds. It is a rather special version with a castle mound and a farm mound dating from the early Middle Ages. The remains of the castle mound are evident and surrounded by a large moat.
The farm mound, located west of the castle tower, is more obscure. Only a low embankment encircles the farm mound, which measures approximately 110x130 metres. There have probably been several farms and houses on the mound. The moat and fences have kept thieves and wild animals out. When larger numbers of enemies attacked, the inhabitants sought refuge in the safer castle tower.
Asserstrup with its beech wood is almost like an oasis in the middle of the cultivated landscape.
There is access to the ramparts from 8 a.m. to sunset, but the main building has to be enjoyed from a distance, as there is no access to it. A sign shows the way to the castle mounds.
