Albuen and Enehøje

Picture
Albuen is a 7 km long spit at the outer end of Nakskov Fjord. It has achieved cult status, and is visited by guests in their thousands every year. The main characteristic of Albuen is a unique cultural environment at the edge of the spit, with probably the world's largest preserved medieval herring market-place  situated around the naturally formed Albue harbour. The whole area represents a unique cultural environment with lighthouse, pilotage, coastal lookout and fishing, Geologically, Albuen is also a gem, as lakes and salt marshes testify to a landscape created by wind, current and material migration. On the environmental side, we are proud to have eastern Denmark's largest population of natterjack toads on Albuen. The light reflecting between the Fjord and the strait is unique, no matter how the weather behaves.

You can visit Albuen while taking the Post boat tour, sail there yourself and tie up at the jetties in the harbour, or take a hike along the spit. It is 6 km to the large, white Pilot's house. Along the way, you can enjoy nature and swim from the beautiful sandy beach.

Enehøje is the fjord’s somewhat unknown gem, but it has cult status among lovers of nature who appreciate the scenery and the silence. Enehøje is 2.8 km long and the fjord's largest island. It differs from many other places by being unusually hilly with a varied landscape.

The name is no coincidence, for with 16 metres at its highest point, the island protrudes up across all of West Lolland and Nakskov Fjord. This means that there are many beautiful views. The ground at Enehøje is also unusually sandy, with the result that a specific flora and rare insects are found here.

At the highest point you can see Peter Freuchen’s arch formed from the bones of a whale jaw. This is the main memorial to the famous Greenland explorer who owned the island for 14 years.

You can visit Enehøje while on the Post boat tour, stay awhile and be collected later, or sail there yourself, casting anchor in the lee of the island. An overnight stay in or near the island's shelter is something special. This means that, at times, you can stay on a deserted island and enjoy the tranquility and nature.
